Captain Davis
Captain Davis of the Confederate army was discharged in North Carolina at the end of the Civil War, and disheartened and war-weary, he headed off on foot for his home in Kosciusko, MS. Somewhere in the mountains of the Carolinas he found an apple tree, the apples of which were the best he had ever eaten. He pocketed some of the seeds and planted them at his Mississippi home where the resultant trees proved to be heat tolerant, productive, and “the most fragrant apple I have ever seen” (Virginia nurseryman Steve Kelly). The apple is green with a red blush, sweet, crisp and juicy, and ripens in late July-early August. Available on MM.111 semi-dwarfing rootstock. SOLD OUT
